The cute little Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) is the second most popular breed in the world….no surprise!

The Yorkshire Terrier was bred in the 19th century in the county of Yorkshire, England, to catch rats in clothing mills.

During the Victorian Era the Yorkie became a popular pet and show dog in England.
The first Yorkie came to North America in 1872 but the American Kennel Club (AKC) didn’t recognize the breed until 1885.

Although the Yorkie was a sought after breed it’s popularity dropped in the 1940’s. Ironically all small breed dogs registered with the (AKA) fell to an all-time low in the 1940’s. A famous war dog from World War II named Smokey is credited with bringing the Yorkie back to popularity.

Yorkshire Terriers are very smart and easy to train. It’s in a Yorkies nature to work without any human assistance.

They were bred to be a working breed and like a lot of physical and mental stimulation. Keeping their minds and body busy can be a challenge but stimulation is a must for a happy Yorkie.

Yorkies like long walks (mostly running), “doggie games” (mostly running) and they actually like training.

Even though they are known for being a bit yappy at times they say a contented Yorkie is a quiet one.

They are all individuals, not unlike humans, and some Yorkies can be much more laid back than others.

Yorkies are known to be adaptable and especially with their small size can travel well . Yorkies are “people lovers” and need daily interaction with their owners.

Yorkshire Terriers can tend to bark a lot. The good part about barking a lot makes them excellent watch dogs and will let their owners know when anyone gets close. Proper training and exercise does help with the barking problem.

Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs ranks the Yorkshire Terrier 27th, but I would suspect for most Yorkie owners they rank #1.
